Exploring the impact of long health conditions on work (A systematic review of the literature)

COMPLETED

Aims Supervision of a King’s College London year 3 medical student scholarly research project. This literature review explores how physical and mental health disability impact work participation in patients with specific health conditions (inflammatory bowel disease, myocardial infraction and stroke).

What the research will involve:

Scoping review of the published literature, write up final reports and presentations at annual scientific meeting

What has the study found so far?

  • In general, the health conditions under investigation were found to have the potential to adversely impact a person’s work participation through increased absenteeism, presenteeism, overall work productivity impairment and limitations with career progression. These reviews illustrate there’s a need to promote improved workplace support for patients with these health conditions and the importance of long-term treatment and management to reduce symptom severity.

  • Individual studies were completed in 2022 and findings were presented at Society of Occupational Medicine and Faculty of Occupational Medicine conference in Newcastle (June 2023).

  • One of the students won The Morris Cooke Prize for undergraduate medical students
